THE CITY Comes To Sydney Theatre Company At The Wharf 2 6/29-8/9

Sydney Theatre Company presents THE CITY by Martin Crimp, 29 June to 9 August 2009. Opening Night Friday 3 July 2009 at 8.15pm Wharf 2, Sydney Theatre Company, Pier 4, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay

Benedict Andrews directs the Australian premiere of the mystery-filled play The City by one of Britain's most ground-breaking playwrights, Martin Crimp. This darkly comic play with set design by Ralph Myers, costumes by Fiona Crombie and lighting by Nick Schlieper, is part of Sydney Theatre Company's 2009 Main Stage program and is presented at Wharf 2 from 29 June to 9 August, opening on 3 July.

A suburban married couple are having trouble communicating with each other. Clair (Belinda McClory), a translator, is fascinated by her chance encounter with a well-known writer involved in a strange incident at the train station. Her husband, Christopher (Colin Moody), is preoccupied with a corporate restructure and allegiances at work that may lead to his redundancy. A visit from their neighbour, a nurse called Jenny (Anita Hegh), complaining about the incessant screaming of their children, doesn't help matters. And the children may have locked themselves in the playroom with a key that no-one knew existed.

With characteristic unsettling humour, Crimp explores the angst looming ominously over the contemporary urban milieu.

The City follows Benedict Andrews' acclaimed recent work with the company as director of The War of The Roses and The Season at Sarsaparilla. He directEd Martin Crimp's Attempts On Her Life also in the intimacy of Wharf 2 while responsible with Wesley Enoch for the Company's Blueprints program. He divides his time between Australia and Berlin where he is a regular guest with the Schaubühne Am Lehniner Platz.
The City premiered last April at London's Royal Court and has recently been staged at Paris' Theatre de la Ville. Crimp's other major plays include Dealing with Clair, The Treatment, Attempts on Her Life, The Country, and Cruel and Tender as well as translations of The Maids (Genet), The False Servant (Marivaux) The Seagull (Chekhov) and Rhinoceros (Ionesco).
