K. PAGE STUART AND THE SLEEPWALKER'S PARADE
The exhilarating band, Sleepwalker's Parade, is fronted by adventurous vocalist K. Page Stuart who plays outside conventional notions of genre, reshaping familiar sounds in radical ways. Before forming the Sleepwalker's Parade, K. Page studied experimental voice with Meredith Monk, served as artist in residence at HERE Arts Center, and performed with downtown luminaries such as Antony of Antony and The Johnson's and toy instrument impresario, Rebecca Moore. This formidable band has performed on the downtown arts scene, and recently at the Judson Church presented by Movement Research, Brooklyn Academy Of Music's BAMcafé, and at the Gershwin Hotel in collaboration with award winning poet Cornelius Eady. K. Page Stuart and the Sleepwalker's Parade offer a daring sonic exploration of raw emotional lyrics exploring The Edges light and darkness in society and human nature. IKEBE SHAKEDOWN
"The band takes signature Afrobeat elements-big unison horns, slinky bass lines, tight little guitar licks-and blends them with tasty grooves culled from '70s-style horn-driven funk," writes WNYC Radio about the New York City-based band, whose recently released, self-titled album plays with elements of
cinematic soul, Afro-funk, deep disco, and boogaloo in all the right ways. Most of the rhythm section met at Bard College, and the band rounded-out and officially formed when everyone settled in Brooklyn in 2008. From there, Ikebe has emerged as a compelling voice on the progressive local scene. After a run of dates around NYC, the band recorded their debut 7" single and the EP, Hard Steppin', which was released on Colemine Records in 2009, receiving high praise from critics and fans alike. After spending a few years together the group, named after a favorite Nigerian boogie record (and pronounced "ee-KAY-bay"), delivers a driving set of tunes featuring a mighty horn section anchored by tight, deep-pocketed grooves. "Ikebe Shakedown re-creates the kind of vibrant vintage funk that sends crate-digging DJs into spasms of joy," according to Time Out New York. KAUMAKAIWA KANAKA'OLE
Since birth, Kaumakaiwa has dedicated his life to his family's practice and passion-the art of hula. As a ‘olapa (dancer) of H?lau O Kekuhi for more than fifteen years, the 27-year-old has studied and performed all aspects of hula, oli, and haku mele, drawing on seven generations and beyond in practices that have been maintained within a traditional family lifestyle dedicated to hula and the Hawaiian culture. Accompanied by a passionate, unmatched love of his culture and drawing on his lineage, Kaumakaiwa is blazing a new trail in the 21st century, while paying homage to those who have come before him, a theme that resonates with his newly-released third album. Kaumakaiwa Kanaka‘ole is the voice of Hawai'i's new generation. Following his appearance at globalFEST 2011, The New York Times praised Kaumakaiwa's "chameleonic vocals. He vaulted through various registers and timbres, from bass to witchy contralto rasp to sweet soprano (his "skinny girl" voice, he said), a traditionalist tour de force." UP FROM THE STACKS
A musical theater piece by Ben Katchor and Mark Mulcahy
