Sydney Theatre Co Presents HAMLET March 18- April 8

By:

STC Ed presents Hamlet by William Shakespeare in a new adaptation by Naomi Edwards, runs 18 March to 8 April 2011. Opening Night: Monday 21 March 2011 at Wharf 2, Sydney Theatre Company, Pier 4, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay

In a twist on Shakespeare's classic revenge tragedy, actress Nikki Shiels plays a teenage female Hamlet at Wharf 2 from 19 March to 8 April 2011. Hamlet is the first production of Sydney Theatre Company's extensive 2011 Education program (STC Ed), with evening performances open to the general public.

In Naomi Edwards' production, Hamlet and her peers are Gen Y's. Having just finished school, all the rules and structures, order and expectations that once defined their world have changed. they are required to act and exist in an adult realm, whether they are ready or not.

Then comes catastrophe. A father murdered, a mother remarried, friendships tested, Hamlet struggles to come to terms with grief in a world turned upside down.

Condensed and action-packed, this vibrant 90 minute Hamlet featuring Shakespeare's language, live music and modern references, has been created especially for teenagers.

STC Ed delivers a specially designed program for up to 30,000 young people each year, including four major productions, a range of workshops, professional development opportunities for teachers and a range of other activities.

Director: Naomi Edwards, Set & Costume Designer: Andrew Bellchambers,
