Stoneham Theatre Presents THE SPARROW in East Coast Premiere, 10/22

By:

After garnering critical and popular acclaim with its debut at the House Theatre of Chicago, The Sparrow comes to Stoneham Theatre for its East Coast Premiere. Nathan Allen, who both conceived and directed the original Chicago production of The Sparrow, will also be directing the Stoneham Theatre production. The Sparrow tells the story of an orphaned teenager named Emily Book who returns home to finish her final year of high school-but this time, she's carrying a secret. An ordinary teenager with extraordinary abilities must now embrace her supernatural powers and confront the truth about her past.

Director Nathan Allen describes The Sparrow as "a spectacle of movement and objects." He states that "there's a beautiful score and a lot of movement used to create imaginative space. In one moment you'll be in the classroom and then suddenly you'll be on a train as it's crashing. In a movie, this is normal, but on stage we don't often see this fluidity of scale and setting. The Sparrow is a very cinematic piece."

The show is one that the director hopes will draw a diverse crowd. It's a story that is "a little bit superhero and a little bit fairytale" that both young and old will enjoy. "The Sparrow has two generations in it-the adults and the kids. People of all ages in the community will get to come together during this show and celebrate our commonalities," Allen says.

Stoneham Theatre will be offering a student ticket special for The Sparrow. Student tickets will be $20 when bought in advance or $10 when bought a half hour before show time (student rush). Stoneham Theatre will also be hosting a "Not Your Average Student Night" on Friday, October 23rd at the 8pm performance, where students will have a chance to meet the actors. All student tickets on Student Night will be $10 at the door and in advance.

The Sparrow features music composed by Kevin O'Donnell, Choreography by Tommy Rapley, Costume Design by Joanna Murphy, Lighting Design by Mark Lanks, Scenic Design by Collette Pollard, Sound Design by Michael Griggs, and Projection Design by Lucas Merino.

The Sparrow runs Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, November 8. Tickets are $44 or $38 for adults, and student and senior discounts are available. Stoneham Theatre is located at 395 Main Street in Stoneham. For tickets and information, visit or call the Box Office at 781-279-2200, open Tuesday through Saturday 1-6pm, or visit www.stonehamtheatre.org.
