Steep Theatre premieres 'Greensboro-A Requiem'

By:

Opening May 8th and running through June 14th, Steep's timely Chicago Premiere of Greensboro – A Requiem reveals more than corrupt politics, violence, and a miscarriage of justice, but the nightmare of innocence caught in the grip of evil.

On November 3rd, 1979, five people were killed and eight more injured when members of the Klu Klux Klan and the self-proclaimed American Nazis stormed an anti-Klan rally in Greensboro, North Carolina. The event received scant media attention as the next day 66 Americans were taken hostage in Iran and held for 444 days. The Tony Award Winning Emily Mann is at her docu-drama best, bringing the tragedy the attention and coverage it lacked 28 years ago.

The script is based on courtroom transcripts, newspaper articles and interviews with survivors creating an ambitious and riveting theatrical event that Mann describes as "eerily present" for our own time. Steep's large-ensemble, multimedia production is its most ambitious technical production to date and will be directed by ensemble member Brad Akin, who directed the Jeff Nominated Book of Days and Jeff Recommended The Last Days of Judas Iscariot.

Critically acclaimed Mike Tutaj is designing sound and multimedia projection. He has won a couple of Jeff Awards practically creating a category in his name.
