Stage One, the charity committed to developing and supporting producers for the commercial theatre industry, today announced that producer Joseph Smith will be succeeding Nick Salmon as Chief Executive of the organisation, taking up the role from the beginning of November.

Since 2006, Joseph Smith has been Executive Producer for Old Vic Productions alongside Chief Executive Sally Greene. As well as the ongoing collaboration with The Old Vic Theatre Company, Joseph's current and most recent production credits for OVP include Billy Elliot - The Musical worldwide, Jerusalem, Clybourne Park, and The Prisoner of 2nd Avenue. Since 2010, he has also operated as the commercial consultant for The Royal Court Theatre on the successful commercial transfers of Enron, Jerusalem and Clybourne Park.

Commenting on his appointment, Joseph said: "Stage One is at the cutting edge in terms of supporting new producing talent. I have always been passionate about nurturing the next generation of theatrical entrepreneurs and am delighted to be taking over the baton from Nick Salmon. I look forward to working with all the Stage One team and the wider producing community in strengthening the organisation and developing this vital work further across the industry."

The Chair of Stage One, Luke Johnson of Risk Capital Partners, said: "Stage One is very pleased that Joseph Smith will be leading us forward in the coming years. He brings an energy and commitment to the organisation that will ensure that Stage One continues to be at the heart of quality commercial producing in the UK. The Stage One Council and all the Stage One alumni would like to extend sincere thanks to Nick for his wise and loyal leadership. We wish him all the best with his endeavours at Playful Productions. "

As an independent producer with Michael McCabe for McCabe/Smith Partnership, Joseph's producing credits include Million Dollar Quartet and Spring Awakening in the West End, and on Broadway, credits include How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Previous to his commercial producing work, Joseph worked at The National Theatre for ten years, culminating in producing the ground-breaking Transformation Season, which included 13 world premieres with artists including Deborah Warner, Kathryn Hunter, Matthew Bourne, Mick Gordon, Roy Williams, Richard Bean, Owen McCafferty and Simon Bent.
