Spamalot Opens In Las Vegas In March

A 90-minute, no intermission Spamalot will begin previews at Wynn Las Vegas on March 8 with a gala opening March 31.

At a press conference, Spamalot creator Eric Idle joined Steve Wynn and O'Hurley to announce the opening. It follows by just a few weeks the opening of The Producers at Paris Las Vegas. In the latter show, David Hasselhoff will play Roger DeBris.

O'Hurley, famed as Mr. Peterman on Seinfeld and his stint on Dancing With The Stars, made his entrance by emerging from a giant can of Spam.

"David Hasselhoff gets a prom dress, and I've got to hop out of a can of processed meat. The theater is alive and well!" he claimed in his most stentorian tone. He will play King Arthur in the show.

Idle told those at the press conference that during the 1980s, a time when "musicals were all about helicopters," he approached Mel Brooks to collaborate on a musical version of The Producers with Brooks as Max and himself as Leo. His suggestion was declined. "Sometimes I wonder whatever happened to that idea?" he mused.

With legitimate theater — Hairspray, Avenue Q, We Will Rock You — an endangered species in Las Vegas following a series of closures last year. Wynn said he closed Avenue Q so he'd have a theater available to Spamalot, not because it was losing money.

Ticket prices for Spamlot will be $49 to $99. Top for The Producers is $143.50
