Something Underground Theatre Company Presents: BETSY: WISDOM OF A BRIGHTON WHORE, THE WELL AND THE SILENT STREAM
This May's Brighton Fringe, sees another new play about Brighton's hidden past.
Once The Prince Regent began frequenting Brighton, the market for prostitution took... a sudden upturn!
"Betsy: Wisdom of a Brighton Whore" combines a gripping plot from award-winning writer Jonathan Brown, passionate acting from Hove-based actor Rachel Guershon, and a deeply atmospheric venue in Brighton's Old Police Cells Museum creating an incredibly intense drama, set in Victorian Brighton.
The one-woman play centres around Betsy who, after being expelled from St Mary's Home for Penitent Women for her brazen irreverence, is thrust into an unknown world where she discovers she can still make a living from her body. Soon she becomes confidant and concubine to local dignitary George Bintshaft. But, after subsequently bearing a child, she finds herself in grave danger.
Something Underground Theatre Company, who last year Won the Best New Play Award at The Brighton Fringe have created another visceral, shocking and tender play blending the brutality of street life with the deep instinctual tenderness of a maternal woman on the edge.
And Something Underground Theatre Company is adding value to The Fringe experience this year, bringing out two other historical plays, which happen to all be linked.
"The Well", playing at Hove Town Hall, is stunning plot-driven physical theatre about the world's deepest hand-dug well, (that exists in Brighton) and is a sequel to "Betsy".
"The Silent Stream" is another prequel to "The Well", about The Prince Regent's battle to build The Pavilion. To do so he decides to divert a hidden river that flowed under Brighton. Unbeknownst to him, the ancient river has allies in the underworld. It too is performed by Jonathan Brown at Hove Town Hall during The Fringe.
All three shows can be seen on a special discounted ticket through the Fringe Box Office.
Says Jonathan, "We're all incredibly excited to have these three shows in The Fringe this year and everyone is working very hard to find the most impactful ways to relate these lost Brighton stories. And they are excellent stories!"
Tickets are now on sale. To book yours, go to the Brighton Fringe Website at www.brightonfringe.org
