SoloNova Breakthrough Performer Of The Year Martin Dockery Plays 6/4-6 At DR2

Following the success of Martin Dockery's The Surprise in terraNOVA Collective's soloNOVA Arts Festival, The DR2 Theatre and terraNOVA Collective have chosen Martin Dockery to return for a special encore run of The Surprise along with his sold out hit of the Orlando Fringe Festival, Wanderlust, June 4-6 at the DR2 Theater (103 East 15th Street). Tickets ($25 per show) are available online at www.terranovacollective.org or by calling Telecharge at 212-239-6200. See both shows with an intermission between the two, including a complimentary glass of wine!

The DR2 Theatre stated: "Mr. Dockery's storytelling was incredibly successful at transporting soloNOVA Festival audiences to his very personal, relatable and stunningly vibrant psyche. After seeing THE SURPRISE, it became both our responsibility and privilege to ensure the New York audience was given an additional opportunity to witness these performances currently drawing national attention. Although many of the festival's participants were talented artists worthy of additional exposure, we are confident in presenting Martin Dockery as our Breakthrough Performer of the Year, our first joint presentation with our Theatre in Residence, terraNOVA
Collective."

WANDERLUST
June 4-6 @ 8:00pm
Sold out run in the Orlando Fringe
After more than a decade of temping, both at work and in relationships, a man embarks on a solo trip deep into Africa, trekking from the Atlantic to the Sahara. There he demands an Epiphany. Any Epiphany. Some proof that though we're temporary, we're more than mere temps. From a night spent in the desert outside Timbuktu, to an encounter with a prostitute in a bungalow, Wanderlust is about the fantasy of destination. It is the tale of an ex-girlfriend who's getting married and a current girlfriend who wishes she were. It is the comic, true story of who we are as we search for who we'd like to be.

"Dockery is the real deal, and Wanderlust is magical." -Elizabeth Maupin, The Orlando Sentinel

"Spectacularly good... absolutely unforgettable... Dockery's language is precise and specific and utterly evocative." -Martin Denton, nytheatre.com

THE SURPRISE
June 4-6 @ 9:30pm
If you missed it during soloNOVA, here's your second chance!
Set amidst the ruins of Angkor Wat, The Surprise is the true and comic story of an uncertain girlfriend, an enigmatic father, and a most epic game of emotional chicken. It is the tale of a family rife with secrets, and clueless as to how to reveal them.

Winner: Audience Choice Award FRIGID '09,
Selected by soloNOVA as best solo performance of FRIGID FESTIVAL NYC 2009

"His relentless energy is so engaging, you want to hang on his every word." -Illana Novick, New Theatre Corps

"A funny, warm, and entertaining hour of storytelling. Directed with economy by Jean-Michele Gregory, the piece...deftly holds our interest until the final moment... It's never less than entertaining... A superlative storytelling show, one that offers plenty to laugh about, relate to, and ponder long after the storyteller has left the stage." -Martin Denton, nytheatre.com

MARTIN DOCKERY has told stories on the stages of The Moth, Speakeasy, The Liar Show, and many others in and around New York City. Last year Wanderlust was performed in San Francisco, Westchester County, and in New York City at both Ars Nova and The Barrow Group Studio Theatre, where it enjoyed a sold-out run. He performed a new monologue, The Bike Trip, at Galapagos Art Space in NYC at the end of January; and debuted another new show, The Surprise, at the end of February, as part of the New York FRIGID Festival, where it won an Audience Choice Award, before being selected for the soloNOVA Festival in May. Also in May, he performed Wanderlust at The Orlando Fringe Festival (where it sold out and was selected as Best in Venue), and will be traveling with the show in June & July to Fringe Festivals in London, Toronto, and Winnipeg, before traveling to San Francisco with The Surprise in September. Last summer he performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with The Liar Show, which The Scotsman gave 4 stars. His stories have made him a seven-time finalist in The Moth's bi-annual Grandslam Storytelling Championship. Also, he was a co-creator of the play C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, which ran on Broadway as The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. His play Oh, That Wily Snake!, which The New York Times called "fantastic," is part of a McGraw-Hill anthology textbook on literature. He received his B.A. in English from Kenyon College and his M.F.A. in playwriting from Columbia University.
