Signature Theatre Hosts Special Gay Men's HIV Awareness Evening 10/1

By:

To commemorate the Washington DC premiere of Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South and Gay Men's HIV Awareness Day, Signature Theatre is hosting a special post-show panel discussion on Saturday, October 1st at 8:00pm. The discussion, "30 Years is Enuf," is presented through special arrangement with the Black Gay Men's Network, Black AIDS Institute, and Jane M. Saks. Single ticket prices - which includes the performance, post-show discussion and meet-and-greet/book-signing with author & star E. Patrick Johnson - are available at the Signature Box Office at a special discounted price of $35 by using the code word METRO.

Based on his award-winning and critically acclaimed book, E. Patrick Johnson stars in this exploration into the southern black gay community - a population rarely acknowledged in writings about the South. Sweet Tea is currently playing in Signature's intimate ARK Theatre through October 9, 2011.

The "30 Years is Enuf" discussion will be moderated by a representative from the Black AIDS Institute. Panelists will include E. Patrick Johnson, Tim'm (artist, HIV/AIDS activist, and character illustrated in Sweet Tea), and Ron Simmons (Us Helping Us). The post-show discussion will also feature an interactive Q&A with the audience.

Directed by Rajendra Maharaj (365 Days at New York's Public Theatre, and Marat Sade at the Classical Theatre of Harlem), Sweet Tea collects life stories from black gay men of all ages who were born, raised, and continue to live in the southern United States and is inspired by Johnson's personal journey. With this play, Johnson reinforces the spoken-word tradition while challenging stereotypes - and finding humor, humanity and hope within.
