Sheldon Concert Hall Presents THE SHELDON CHORALE: AN AMERICAN TAPESTRY 10/11
The Sheldon presents The Sheldon Chorale: An American Tapestry, Monday, October 11 at 8 p.m.in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. The 25-person chorale, directed by Allen Carl Larson, will be accompanied by flutist Jennifer Toro Mazzoni and cellist Bjorn Ranheim. This concert is part of the American Arts Experience-St. Louis. Representing the best in American choral composition, the program features a range of music from early William Billings including "When Jesus Wept," to contemporary works such as Kathryn Bowers' "Music, When Soft Voices Die" and RoBert Howard's "Dream Catchers," based on Native American poetry. The program features two pairings of pieces, the first two sets of madrigals based on the plays of Shakespeare, one set by Martin Mailman, and the other by the still living Emma Lou Diemer, who was Chorale Director Allen Larson's first college piano teacher in 1955. The other pairing is based on James Agee's text Sure on This Shining Night, the first setting by Samuel Barber followed by Morten Lauridsen's version. The final grouping of songs celebrates the folk tradition in America , including two lively spirituals from the African-American culture, "Same Train" and "Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit." Larson says, "This should be an inspiring, informative and uplifting performance celebrating the American Arts in our community."
