John Malkovich to Direct LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES at Shakespeare Theatre Company in December

The Shakespeare Theatre Company has announced the addition of five intriguing fall and winter presentations from abroad for its 2012-2013 STC Presents Series. Three of the five presentations, hailing from the United Kingdom and Paris, will explore the psychology of war, the endurance of storytelling and the decadence of an era of aristocracy. The two other presentations will be one-man shows, based on Shakespeare, which will engage younger audiences in January as part of STC's Youth and Family Series.

The National Theatre of Scotland's dynamically powerful Black Watch will return to the Shakespeare Theatre Company following 2011's sold-out engagement. Hailed as "a soul-piercing production…authentic and astonishing" (The Washington Post), the piece combines music, movement and emotional candor to create an unforgettably moving and hypnotic experience. Black Watch will run in Sidney Harman Hall (610 F Street NW) from September 19–October 7, 2012.

On the heels of Black Watch, and in time for the holidays, The National Theatre of Scotland will bring a second performance to Washington, D.C. AcclaimEd Scottish playwright David Grieg's The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, inspired by the Border ballads of Scotland, follows an academician in a pub in Kelso on her supernatural and affirming Midwinter's Eve journey through a world of Scottish nostalgia. Performed to sold-out audiences, The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart stormed the pubs of Scotland to become the hit of the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. STC's presentation of The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart will run in a local D.C. pub from November 14–December 9, 2012.

The final presentation hails from Paris, where Emmy Award winner and Golden Globe and Academy Award nominee John Malkovich has revived the French language version of Christopher Hampton's Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Malkovich, who played Vicomte de Valmont in the 1988 film adaptation of the play, directs the Théâtre de l'Atelier's Les Liaisons Dangereuses, performed in French with English subtitles. The play will run in the Lansburgh Theatre (450 7th Street NW) from December 6–9, 2012.

In addition to these three presentations, STC will present a week of student and public performances written and performed by British artist Tim Crouch, geared toward younger audiences. The one-man plays I, Peaseblossom and I, Malvolio tell the stories of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Twelfth Nightfrom the perspective of their namesake characters. Both presentations are part of a series of four solo plays written by Crouch, imaginatively re-inventing Shakespeare for young audiences. The plays are part of STC's Youth and Family Series and will be presented in The Forum in Sidney Harman Hall (610 F Street NW) from January 23–26, 2013.
