By:

The Live Aloha Hawaiian Cultural Festival, Sunday, Sept. 12, 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., in Center House and Mural Amphitheatre, provides a feast for the senses as visitors journey through the sights, sounds and tastes of Hawaii with Hawaiian music and hula, workshops, Hawaiian crafts, keiki-activities, exhibits and ono food.

Join many of the over 50,000 Hawaiian Islanders who call Washington their home as they share their homeland"s colorful history.

The 2010 Festival features local halau and Hawaiian music groups, hands-on lei making and lauhala weaving workshops, and Hawaiian craft vendors. Learn more about Hawaii"s history with Hawaiian history documentaries and exhibits. Visitors will also experience a day in the life of an ancient Hawaiian with the Hawaiian Living History exhibit where visitors can taste poi, learn to chant, and view ancient Hawaiian artifacts.

Special guests this year include award winning ukulele players Herb Ohta, Jr. and Keoki Kahumoku as well as world-renowned Grammy Award Winning slack-key guitar player Cyril Pahinui!

The 22 Festál cultural celebrations highlight The Common forms of tradition and expression among ethnic communities in the Pacific Northwest, while underscoring their unique creative contributions, customs, foods and ideals. Our 2010 "did you know" will explore some of these commonalities and differences.

Did you know? The Hawaiian state flag colors are red, white and blue, however, red and gold are more truly traditional Hawaiian colors and signify Hawaiian royalty. Traditional foods include Laulau, Kalua pig and poi; and popular foods currently include rice and spam. The aloha spirit provides the greatest source of cultural pride. Traditionally, whaling and now agriculture (sugarcane, pineapples, macadamia nuts, coffee), hula/music, apparel, tourism and military activity provide livelihood for Hawaiians.

Seattle Center Festál: Live Aloha Hawaiian Cultural Festival is presented by Seattle Center in partnership with the Live Aloha Hawaiian Cultural Festival Committee.
