Seanachaí Theatre Co Presents THE SHADOW OF A GUNMAN 9/17-10/23

By:

Seanachaí Theatre Company opens its 2011/12 season Classic Voices: The Revolutionaries with Sean O'Casey's The Shadow of a Gunman in the 3rd Floor theatre at the Irish American Heritage Center. Directed by John Mossman of The Artistic Home (Juno and the Paycock), The Shadow of a Gunman runs from September 17th to October 23rd. Ensemble actors Jeff Christian, Barbara Figgins and Anne Sunseri are joined in the cast by Walter Brody, Anthony DeMarco, Jeff Duhigg, Rob Glidden, Shane Kenyon, Maggie Kettering, Andrew Marikis, Jodi Kingsley and Skye Shrum. Ensemble members Michael Grant and Mary Rose O'Connor are Production stage manager and stage manager.

The design team includes Stephen Carmody (Set), Garvin Jellison, (Lighting), and Beth Laske-Miller (Costume). Dialect Coaching is by Elise Kauzlaric.

In a Dublin tenement four years after the Easter Rising, poet Donal Davoren finds himself the victim of mistaken identity as an IRA gunman. The notoriety of being a "gunman on the run" becomes an amusing and attractive alter ego, especially given the newfound affection of the lovely patriot Minnie Powell. But at what cost?

The Shadow of a Gunman (1923) is part of O'Casey's well-known Dublin Trilogy, which includes Juno and the Paycock (1924) and The Plough and the Stars (1926), the latter of which inspired Irish patriots to riot.

Seanachaí is the Gaelic word for Storyteller.
The people's stories were at the very core of ancient Irish culture. It was the duty of the Seanachaí to keep these stories alive. The mission of Seanachaí Theatre Company is to return theatre to this origin - by creating compelling productions and programs that focus the energy of artists towards The Common goal of exceptional storytelling. To achieve this end, Seanachaí Theatre Company strives to provide an atmosphere where all theatre artists - actors, playwrights, directors and designers - have the support and assurance to collaborate openly. That is at the heart of all ensemble companies, and Seanachaí has proven itself a major player in Chicago's ensemble-driven theatrical community.
