Saul Williams Plays Joe's Pub, 9/2 & 3

Poet, actor and musician Saul Williams will make his debut at Joe's Pub to present CHORUS – A Spoken Word Tour on September 2nd and 3rd. Published by Simon & Schuster, CHORUS provides an introduction to a choir of one hundred young poets, students, and outsiders who might not otherwise have their voices heard, along with poets as old as legendary Abiodun Oyewole (who spearheaded the infamous Last Poets in 1968) and as young as Justin Long Moton (2011 New York City Youth Poet Laureate).

At Joe's Pub, CHORUS will be presented as a "literary mixtape," which Williams intends to serve as an anthem of a new generation of poets unified by the desire to transcend the identity politics of the day and begin to be seen as one. CHORUS also marks Williams' return to his spoken word roots.

Williams' career began in 1996 when he won the title of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe's Grand Slam Champion and starred in the independent film Slam, winner of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize in 1998. Since that time he has released the critically acclaimed albums Volcanic Sunlight and The Inevitable Rise And Liberation Of Niggy Tardust, garnered international notoriety and collaborated with numerous artists including Erykah Badu, Nas, The Roots, Trent Reznor and Zack De La Rocha. He is as much a descendant of KRS One and Public Enemy as he is Allen Ginsberg and Amiri Baraka.

Throughout all these chaotic ventures, Saul Williams has been one steady thing: an uncompromising voice determined to tap the adrenaline center of his existence with any tool he can get his hands on.

Raised in Newburgh, New York by a preacher and a schoolteacher, Williams' learned early on what it meant to have a calling. He first tasted the intoxication of performance in an elementary school production of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. The next year, a 4th grade encounter with T La Rock's "It's Yours" inspired his first poem. This creativity blossomed into academic ambition, but, as Williams told Interview Magazine, "It was always important to me to be that kid who could rock the party as well as rock the English professor's mind."
