According to The Hollywood Reporter, Samuel L. Jackson has joined the cast of the upcoming ROBOCOP remake from MGM/Sony. The film will be directed by Jose Padiha. Jackson will join previously announced cast members Joel Kinnarman, who will star in the title role and Gary Oldman, who will portray the scientist/creator.

The sci-fi action film first appeared on the big screen in 1987. The remake will center on Joel Kinnaman's character, a cop named Alex Murphy, who is brought back from The Edge of death and made into a cyborg police officer. Jackson will portray Pat Novak, described as "a charismatic media mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world."

The film will be produced by Strike Entertainment's Marc Abraham and Eric Newman. Shooting is set to get underway in September in Toronto with a tentative release date of summer 2013.

Jackson, who can currently be seen onscreen as Nick Fury in The Avengers, is shooting Quentin Tarantino's drama Django Unchained. The award-winning actor made his Broadway debut in "The Mountaintop" as Martin Luther King Jr.
