Current Vice President-elect, Michael Pence, paid a visit to Broadway's revolutionary mega-hit, "Hamilton" this evening and reports from inside the theater confirm a less than enthusiastic reception for the former governor of Indiana.
According to Twitter users who attended the Friday night performance of the show, the forthcoming Vice President got a mixed reception from the packed house, with users confirming that Pence was both cheered and booed upon arrival.
Pence's icy reception extended throughout the show, with audience members confirming notable reactions to many key lines, including a standing ovation for the lyric, "Immigrants, we get the job done" as well as responses to George Washington's warning to Hamilton "Winning is easy, young man, governing is harder" and a joke about a former vice president, "John Adams doesn't have a real job anyway."
Reports also confirm that Rory O'Malley, who currently plays King George III in the show, received such an enthusiastic response to the lyrics, "Do you know how hard it is to lead?" and "When your people say they hate you, don't come crawling back to me" that the actor had to take a few moments to stop the song and re-claim focus. Another reaction came at the end of "Cabinet Battle #2," when Thomas Jefferson notes to Hamilton, "Daddy's calling."
At the show's curtain call, the production's current Aaron Burr, Brandon Victor Dixon, read a statement to the Vice President-elect on behalf of the company and all Americans, stating their hopes that, despite the divisive rhetoric of the Trump campaign and the former Indiana governor's history of homophobic policies, the forthcoming administration will govern on behalf of all Americans.
The short statement reads as follows:
"Vice President Elect Pence, welcome.
Thank you for joining us at Hamilton-An American Musical.
We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights.
We hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values, and work on behalf of ALL of us.
Thank you."
