A sold out crowd greeted the first performance of STABILIZED NOT CONTROLLED at Stage Left Studio, 214 W 30th Street, this past Sunday. Weekly shows continue Sundays at 5:00 pm through May and June.

The show has been developed for two years utilizing coaching from Amy Jones (voice), Kathy Kelly Christos (movement and staging), Helena Judd (development), and Cheryl King and Jeffrey Edward Peters providing dramaturgy. The script utilizes actual quotes from New York City situations seen and heard by playwright and performer Frank Blocker: “It all began with the homeless transvestite dancing across Washington Square Park shouting, ‘I am Jackie O’Nassis.’ From there, once I understood the oft-used phrase, ‘Leave Manhattan? Not on your life!’ I started collecting the words.”

Cheryl King is one of the plays dramaturges as well as producer. She originally directed Blocker in his Drama Desk Award-nominated performance in 2009. “This is his second show at Stage Left Studio, and though both were solo works and both have 17 characters, the plays could not be more different. Watching Frank is like watching a Master Class in character acting.” King refers to Blocker’s recent visit to Florida State College in Jacksonville, where he taught a character acting Master Class and performed the King-directed Southern Gothic Novel for the students.
