The PlayhouseSquare Arts Education Department is hosting a special Teen Night following the Saturday, March 14, evening performance of the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening. Admission to Teen Night is free with a ticket from the show. Teens can enjoy pizza, a DJ, karaoke and an opportunity to meet members of the cast.

"Spring Awakening was written in the 1890s, but the issues it addresses are still relevant to today's teens," stated Colleen Porter, director of arts education at PlayhouseSquare. "Having the show at PlayhouseSquare gives our audiences an opportunity to talk about these issues. We do encourage parents to visit the website parents.springawakening.com to help them determine if Spring Awakening is appropriate for their children."

In conjunction with Teen Night, the Arts Education Department will host a free panel discussion for parents, presented by Your Teen Magazine, a quarterly magazine for parents of teenagers. Members of the publication's advisory board, Elise Ellick and Judy Stenta, will provide advice on how parents can explore issues raised by the show with their teens. Ms. Ellick is the Teen Counselor in the Division of Adolescent Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at MetroHealth. Ms. Stenta, MSW, is the Project Director of Social Advocates for Youth, a program of Bellefaire JCB.

Stephanie Silverman, managing editor of Your Teen, said, "Spring Awakening is a wonderful opportunity for our teens to experience quality theater. The panel discussion will provide parents with the necessary tools to have a meaningful dialogue with their teens about the difficult topics addressed in this musical."

Based on the infamous 1891 Frank Wedekind play, Spring Awakening features an electrifying score by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, direction by Michael Mayer, choreography by award-winning Bill T. Jones and Book by Mr. Sater.

Set against the backdrop of a repressive and provincial late 19th century Germany, Spring Awakening tells the timeless story of teenage self-discovery and budding sexuality as seen through the eyes of three teenagers. Haunting and provocative, Spring Awakening celebrates an unforgettable journey from youth to adulthood with a power, a poignancy and a passion you will never forget.

Spring Awakening will play March 3 through 15 in the Palace Theatre at PlayhouseSquare. Performances are Tuesday - Friday evenings at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 1:00 and 6:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $10 to $65, and are currently on sale at the PlayhouseSquare Ticket Office (1519 Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland), online at playhousesquare.org or by calling 216-241-6000. Promotion code STARS should be used when ordering tickets for Teen Night. Group orders for 15 or more may be placed by calling 216-664-6050.

About Your Teen Magazine

Your Teen, a quarterly publication, offers an open forum for parents. Parents can pose questions, offer personal tactics, and hear the voices of other parents, professionals and teenagers as they weigh in on relevant topics. Volumes have been written on the topic of raising teenagers, but the magazine format for parenting has typically ended prior to parenting adolescents. The challenges, however, do not end there. Your Teen is an opportunity to continue the journey towards the goal of successful parenting. The Your Teen website is www.yourteenmag.com.
