Roundabout's THE UNDERSTUDY Charms New York Magazine

By:

Theresa Rebeck's THE UNDERSTUDY, currently playing off-Broadway at the Laura Pels Theatre as part of the Roundabout Theatre Company's current season, opened on November 5 and seems to be charming audiences and critics alike.

In his review for New York Magazine, Dan Koi writes of the show's uptight and meticulous heroine, Roxanne and her actor ex, Harry:

"Why should we be glad that Harry's return turns Roxanne's orderly world upside down? Because Roxanne is played by Julie White, theater's most accomplished purveyor of barely restrained hysteria, and to watch White play Roxanne falling to pieces, and then pulling herself back together, is the great pleasure of The Understudy."

The Understudy opened off-Broadway on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Laura Pels Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre (111 West 46th Street). The show will run in a limited engagement through Sunday, January 3rd, 2010.

The cast features Julie White, Justin Kirk, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar. The design team includes Alexander Dodge (Sets), Tom Broecker (Costumes), Kenneth Posner (Lights), Obadiah Eaves (Original Music & Sound).

Box office heroes and washed-up has-beens take heed: the play's almost the thing. In this bitingly witty comedy by Theresa Rebeck (Mauritius), the lights of Broadway cast an affectionate glow over this look at one of the most notorious roles in the theatre: the understudy.

Tickets are available by calling Roundabout Ticket Services at (212) 719-1300, online at www.roundabouttheatre.org or at the Laura Pels Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre box office (111 West 46 Street). Ticket prices range from $70.00-$80.00.

The Understudy plays Tuesday through Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. with Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m.
