Newsies, the Tony® Award winning new American musical, has just announced that 2012 Tony Award nominee Ron Raines will temporarily join The Cast in the role of Joseph Pulitzer on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 and will play the role through Sunday, December 16, 2012. He steps in for John Dossett, who will be starring in Giant at The Public Theater.

Ron Raines: Broadway: Follies (Tony Award nomination), Chicago, Show Boat, Teddy and Alice. TV: “Guiding Light” (three-time Emmy® Award nominee), Five PBS “Great Performances.” Recordings: Man of La Mancha, The Pajama Game, 110 in the Shade, Wonderful Town, etc. Over fifty symphonies including Chicago, Cleveland, BBC, Royal Philharmonic, Boston Pops, Philly Pops. National Tours & Regional: The Unsinkable Molly Brown, A Little Night Music, Annie, The King and I, Kiss Me Kate, South Pacific, Kismet, etc.

Since bursting onto Broadway last spring, Newsies set and then broke five Nederlander Theatre house records on its way to becoming the best selling new musical of the spring. The show received 23 major theatrical nominations – including eight Tony Award nods – and won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Score and Choreography.

Newsies features a score with music by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, with a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Newsies is directed by Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli.

The Broadway company of Newsies also features Corey Cott as Jack Kelly, John Dossett as Joseph Pulitzer, Kara Lindsay as Katherine Plumber, Lavon Fisher-Wilson as Medda Larkin, Ben Fankhauser as Davey, Andrew Keenan-Bolger as Crutchie, and Nicholas Lampiasi, and Jake Lucas alternating the role of Les.

Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right.

Newsies is inspired by the real-life ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.
