Broadway headliner and SMASH breakout star Krysta Rodriguez addresses the recent cancellation of the NBC musical drama series following the conclusion of its second season - which happened to be her first one on the show - as well as shares details of her new Broadway starring role in FIRST DATE opposite fellow former NBC star Zachary Levi in a new interview.

Rodriguez reveals that, now, looking back, SMASH seemed doomed after a certain point in Season Two following the move to Saturday nights, generally considered a sure sign of cancellation plans brewing.

"We kind of didn't stand a chance. We were trying to please a group of people who didn't want to be pleased. They had already made up their minds," Rodriguez notes of the generally hostile atmosphere in regards the show in much of the Broadway community.

"In its afterlife, it's so well received," Rodriguez remarks on the strength of the show living on on DVD - out next week - and repeated online viewing, as well as reruns airing on the Ovation Network with even a post-show discussion program once a week.

"But when we were doing it, we were in the crossfires of everybody's anger," she says.

As for how her TV run compares to that of her FIRST DATE co-star, Levi - late of NBC's CHUCK?

"He was on five years of television," Rodriguez soberly opines. "I was only on one."

FIRST DATE opens at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway on August 8, while SMASH Season Two hits DVD next week.
