Just weeks after their completely sold out run of FREEDOM RIDERS: The Civil Rights Musical at the New York Musical Festival, Richard Allen and Taran Gray, the musical's creators, have announced there will be two more shows making FREEDOM RIDERS: The Civil Rights Musical one of three in a series they are calling the "Freedom Trilogy."
Though not many details have been revealed on either new production yet, both upcoming project titles were mentioned in a tweet by co-creator Taran Gray @TaranGrayMusic last night. The titles " BAYARD" and " SWEET LORRAINE ."
BAYARD will be about civil rights organizer and activist Bayard Rustin, best known for organizing the March on Washington and for his work as an advisor to Martin Luther King Jr. during the 50's and 60's. "Bayard brings to the front a Civil Rights icon who saw only backdoor treatment from the very people whom he called friends," says co-creator Richard Allen. "It will be unlike any other musical out there. Bayard was enigmatic, charismatic, and a showman."
"We meet DR. Martin Luther King Jr. three times in his career at The Lorraine Motel in Nashville," Mr. Allen goes on. "It was also the spot of Dr. Kings final moments. SWEET LORRAINE will be a play."
The creators are currently writing BAYARD and seeking representation. After winning the awards for OUTSTANDING MUSIC and the special citation for SOCIAL RELEVANCE AND IMPACT for FREEDOM RIDERS: The Civil Rights Musical from The New York Musical Festival, both new projects come with a lot of anticipation to see what creators Richard Allen and Taran Gray make next.
