Radio City Music Hall Musicians' Strike Reaches Resolution

By:
An orchestra strike at Radio City Music Hall has been settled, with the musicians agreeing to return to work.

The musicians will once again fill Radio City's orchestra, beginning at the 2:30 PM performance of the Radio City Christmas Spectactular today, November 18th.  They had been incited to strike over a contract dispute, according to a New York Daily News Article: "The deal ended a bitter labor dispute in which each party accused the other of foiling negotiations.  The union claimed it had accepted a contract proposal two weeks ago, only to have management suddenly yank the offer. The musicians struck a preview Nov. 2, tried to play performances the following day and were locked out." During the strike, the Christmas Spectacular had featured its Rockettes high-kicking canned music.

On Monday, Mayor Bloomberg began negotiations by having both union and management meet at Gracie Mansion to iron out the dispute; former Schools Chancellor Frank Macchiarola served as mediator.

"I would like to thank Mayor Bloomberg for providing executive leadership in bringing the parties together in a productive forum," stated James Dolan, president of Cablevision Systems Corp.; his company owns Radio City Music Hall.

The lavish Radio City Christmas Spectacular, featuring the Rockettes, runs through January 2nd; it began performances on November 3rd.
