RIALTO CHATTER: Is Will Farrell's ELF Headed to Broadway?
Michael Riedel reports in the New York Post that Will Ferrell's 2003 comedy Elf may be getting Broadway treatment, as a production underwent an industry staged reading last week. Riedel alleges that the buzz surrounding the reading has been positive.
Christian Anderson played Buddy (Farrell's role in the flick), a human-sized man who is raised by Santa's elves on the North Pole and sent to New York to find his real family. George Wendt played Santa Claus, Mark Jacoby Buddy's father, and Beth Leavel his mother.
Warner Brothers is the producer behind the project, whose previous stab at Broadway gold was with the unsuccessful Lestat, while the reportedly catchy score is composed by songwriters Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer). The book is by Thomas Meehan (The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone). The reading was directed by Casey Nicholow.
Elf the movie was directed by Jon Favreau, written by David Berenbaum. The film made over $220 million at the box office worldwide on a $33 million budget.
