Widely regarded as playwright Brian Friel’s masterpiece, Dancing at Lughnasa is a memory play about five unmarried sisters eking out their lives in a small Irish village.

We meet them in 1936 at the time of the festival of Lughnasa, which celebrates the pagan god of the harvest with drunken revelry and dancing. Their spare existence is interrupted by brief, colorful bursts of music from the radio, their only link to the romance and hope of the world at large. The action of the play is told through the memory of the youngest sister's illegitimate son as he remembers his mother, his uncle, his four maiden aunts, and the eventful summer after which their way of life would change forever.

Dancing at Lughnasa opened on Broadway in October, 1991, and won the 1992 Tony Award for Best Play. 

This production is directed by Craig Allen Mummey and features David Dubov, Rebecca Ellis, Doug Krehbel, Steve LaRocque, Leah Mazade, Stephanie Mumford, Laura Russell, and Alyssa Sanders.

Dancing at Lughnasa runs April 20 - May 20.
Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm, with one added 2pm performance on Saturday, May 19.

All performances are held at The Writer's Center: 4508 Walsh Street, Bethesda, MD 20815. There is ample parking across the street (free on weekends), and the theatre is just blocks away from the Bethesda Metro Station on the red line.

Sunday, April 29: Attend Dancing at Lughnasa at 2pm and enjoy a complimentary aftershow event with food and prizes, followed by a free special performance by Steve LaRocque of his one-man play Byline: Ernie Pyle, which features selected reports by the famous World War II correspondent.

Sunday, May 6: Join us at 5pm for a reading of Raphael Falco's new one-act play, Frankie's Market, a surprising exploration of human hope and connection that exposes the twisted significance the lonely assign to even the most casual exchanges. This is a free event followed by a talkback with the playwright.
