Portland Ovations Presents Russian Pianist Nikolai Lugansky, 3/26

By:

Portland Ovations presents Russian Pianist Nikolai Lugansky on Saturday, March 26th at Merrill Auditorium.

The Netherlands' NRC Handelsblad describes Lugansky as "a pianistic phenomenon of exceptional class."

Hailed as the next in the line of great Russian pianists, Nikolai Lugansky has been a prizewinner at the Tchaikovsky International Competition, the International Bach Competition, and the All-Union Rachmaninoff Competition, among others. With a glittering career that spans the globe, Lugansky frequently performs with esteemed ensembles such as the Tokyo and the Los Angeles Philharmonics; the London, Cincinnati and San Francisco symphony orchestras; and the Royal Concertgebouw.

Possessing a soulful stage presence, the young pianist has over 30 major concertos in his repertoire, ranging from Bach to Rachmaninoff. Lugansky has collaborated with major symphony orchestras in Russia, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the USA and with over one hundred and seventy conductors. Nikolai Lugansky has been awarded the title of Honoured Artist of Russia.

In addition to his concert schedule, Lugansky has taught at the Moscow Conservatoire since 1998.

The program for Lugansky's performance in Portland includes word by Frédéric Chopin and Sergei Rachmainoff.

On March 26th at 1:30 p.m., immediately preceding the Nikolai Lugansky concert, Pianist Laura Kargul, joined by student pianists from USM's School of Music, presents a lecture/demonstration focusing on how pianists make interpretive decisions. This event takes place in the Merrill Auditorium Green Room. For more information about Ovations Offstage activities visit www.portlandovations.org/offstage.

Portland Ovations' presentation of Nikolai Lugansky is made possible with corporate support from Wright Express and additional funding from Davis Family Foundation.
