Photo Preview: Single Carrot Theater Presents ILLUMINOCTEM

By:

Once in each of its first two seasons, Single Carrot Theatre has plunged into a new, under-represented art form in the Baltimore performance community with an original work. That trend continues in Single Carrot's third season with ILLUMINOCTEM, running November 27th - December 20th.

After tackling sketch comedy (Sects and Violins) and slam poetry (Slampooned!), the ensemble theater has set its sights on an entirely wordless, movement and dance-based production.

To assist in the artistic endeavor, Single Carrot has partnered with several critically acclaimed artists from around the country, including two-time Emmy winner Chelsea Carter, from the Jim Henson Company, on costume design. Music Director of Second City's touring company Jesse Case is penning an all-original score, and Kwame Opare, of the off-Broadway hit tour STOMP, will be choreographing a short section for the production.

Single Carrot has called upon superb local talents to contribute as well. Towson University's Naoko Maeshiba, and local dancers Sarah Anne Austin and Marilyn Mullen add choreography to the mix. Though choreographers are being utilized, audiences can expect far more than dance along the way.

"It has been a tremendous experience for us" says ILLUMINOCTEM director Brendan Ragan of the training regimen and design, "we're learning how to tell a captivating story without words, which will offer excellent opportunities for audience members to ignite their own curiosities and imaginations as they come along with us."

The production is based on the short story The Day Boy and The Night Girl by George MacDonald, a writer in the late 1800's whose fantastical and wondrous stories influencEd Lewis Carroll, C.S. Lewis, and J.R.R. Tolkien.
"This story provides rich description and highly imaginative themes to play with visually," continues Ragan, "and at the very heart, like most great tales, we have an unlikely, but touching love story."

The production contains nudity and some adult themes; viewer discretion is advised.
