Carnegie Hall hosted a disco attire contest for ticket holders attending The New York Pops season-opening concert, The Music of ABBA, on Friday, October 15, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. with special guest vocal group Rajaton. Participants were invited to embrace the spirit of the decade and to come flaunting their finest leisure suits, bell bottoms, glitter gowns, and other 1970s attire while enjoying the performance of some of ABBA's most popular chart-topping hits including Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, and Take a Chance on Me. The disco glam vintage attire contest took place during intermission.
The Grand Prize winner will be awarded a pair of tickets to three (3) New York Pops performances at Carnegie Hall during the 2010-2011 season, as well as a chance to meet New York Pops Music Director Steven Reineke backstage. Other fun prizes will be awarded to superlative title winners (ex. "Cutest Couple," "Most Creative"). For the most up to date information on the contest and to see a short video about the concert, please visit the Carnegie Hall Facebook page at: facebook.com/event.php?eid=149057115136133.
The New York Pops is the largest independent pops orchestra in the United States and the only professional symphonic orchestra in New York City specializing in popular music. Led by Music Director Steven Reineke, the orchestra performs an annual subscription series and birthday gala at Carnegie Hall, enjoying one of the venue's highest subscription renewal rates of any series. The New York Pops was founded by former NBC Music Director Skitch Henderson in 1983 with a mission to create greater public awareness and appreciation of America's rich musical heritage. Along with performing at Carnegie Hall, The New York Pops tours throughout the world and gives free concerts in New York City parks. The orchestra's media projects include performing for the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular on NBC, nationwide radio broadcasts, and numerous recordings. The New York Pops' extensive education programs allow thousands of public schoolchildren to participate in concert and music-making experiences at Carnegie Hall and in schools throughout New York City's five boroughs.
