The cast of the eight-time Tony Award winning musical, including the award for Best New Musical, performed the Academy Award winning song “Falling Slowly,” featuring Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti. Following a twenty year absence from the New York cabaret scene, Jenifer Lewis returns to the Big Apple for seven performances only at 54 Below, with musical director Marc Shaiman. From Broadway’s Eubie to Hairspray, television’s Jackie’s Back to Strong Medicine, and film’s What’s Love Got to Do With It, Beaches, Cars and The Princess and the Frog, Jenifer Lewis, one of Bette Midler’s most infamous Harlettes, is a force of nature whose voice is as distinctive as her take no prisoners sense of humor. Tony Vincent
Recording artist and Broadway veteran Tony Vincent performed songs from his new EP, In My Head, at his debut New York solo performance at Rockwood Music Hall on July 23. Vincent appeared on the second season of NBC’s reality singing competition, The Voice where he made a lasting impression for fans with his performance of The Eurythmics, “Sweet Dreams.” He released his debut single “Starting Over” as a free download for fans in May. On July 24, Broadway Stands Up for Freedom, the annual benefit concert of the New York Civil Liberties Union (the state-affiliate of the ACLU), was presented at the NYU Skirball Center for Performing Arts. Participating artists included: 2012 Tony-nominee Celia Keenan-Bolger, Steve Pasquale, Nikki Renée Daniels, Julie Halston, Seth Rudetsky and Darius de Haas Proceeds from the show benefit the NYCLU's youth programs, including its work with LGBT teenagers; its Teen Activist Project, which engages New York City teens as organizers and peer educators on civil rights and civil liberties issues; and its work to stop overly aggressive policing and zero-tolerance discipline in the city's public schools. Sydney Theatre Company’s (STC) acclaimed production of Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov opened at the Lincoln Center Festival. The entire original cast, including John Bell, Cate Blanchett, Sandy Gore, Hayley McElhinney, Anthony Phelan, Richard Roxburgh, Andrew Tighe, Jacki Weaver and Hugo Weaving, are reprising their roles for the production. After a three-year absence, Gerard Alessandrini’s Forbidden Broadway returns to the 47th Street Theatre with a brand new edition, Forbidden Broadway: ALIVE AND KICKING which will take on Porgy and Bess, Once, Evita, Anything Goes, Follies, Spiderman, Newsies, Book of Mormon, Nice Work if You Can Get It, and Death of a Salesman, among others. The show, which opens Thursday, September 6, will run for a limited engagement through January 6, 2013. Previews began July 24th. Robert Cuccioli
Tony Award-nominee Robert Cuccioli (Jekyll & Hyde, Les Misérables), Helen Hayes Award-winner Natascia Diaz (Man of La Mancha, Seussical) and Drew Sarich (Les Misérables, Lestat, starring in the upcoming Broadway-bound production of Rocky the Musical in Europe) will star in the July 30th 7:30pm benefit concert of the Benny Andersson, Tim Rice and Bjorn Ulvaeus musical CHESS for The Actor’s Fund at LaGuardia Arts at Lincoln Center. The stripped down all through-sung concert-version will focus on the music, lyrics and characters, emulating the original 1984 concept album and incorporating virtually all of the original London score. Williamstown Theatre Festival presents FAR FROM HEAVEN, a new musical with book by Tony Award winner and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out, Three Days of Rain), music by Tony Award nominee Scott Frankel (Grey Gardens) and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Michael Korie (Grey Gardens, The Grapes of Wrath), now playing through July 29.
