Photo Flash: Single Carrot Presents TRAGEDY: A TRAGEDY
Edward Albee once noted, "Will Eno is one of the finest young playwrights I've come across." It's no surprise that following the praise, Eno was selected as a fellow in the Edward F. Albee Foundation.
For Eno, that honor was one of many. His work as a playwright has earned him a coveted Guggenheim Fellowship, an Oppenheimer award in New York for best debut production, and the first ever Marian Seldes/Garson Kanin Fellowship by the Theater Hall of Fame. In 2005, Eno was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for drama for his play The Flu Season.
One particular piece of praise, though, stuck out to Single Carrot Theatre. Charles Isherwood, a theater critic for the New York Times, once dubbed Will Eno "a Samuel Beckett for the Jon Stewart Generation."
Later this month, Single Carrot Theatre will bring Eno's adventurous writing to Baltimore for the first time, staging his play Tragedy: a tragedy from June 18 - July 11.
"He is a significant writer," says J. Buck Jabaily, director of Tragedy: a tragedy. "I was drawn to this play in part because of my awe for Eno."
On the surface, Tragedy may appear to be an absurd, satirical skewer of modern-day newscasts. But, as Jabaily continues, "He is deceptively complex - writing on several layers at the same time. There are the obvious jokes and word plays on the surface. Beyond that is a an excruciating look at the sad state of the human condition--looking at four newscasters who have eschewed family and friends for their work, and who are all, ultimately, isolated and lonely individuals searching for meaning while providing meaning for the public."
Similar to Samuel Beckett's bleak, avant-garde, thought-provoking work, Eno's writing appeals to an adventurous spirit. The production runs just a little over an hour, will have no intermission, and contains very little stage movement.
"It's a smart piece," says Jabaily, "those looking for a good laugh and a disarming look at our humanity in trouble will get lot out of it."
