The New York Civil Liberties Union yesterday presented Broadway Stands Up for Freedom, its annual benefit show, hosted by Seth Rudetsky and directed by Daniel Goldstein at the NYU Skirball Center for Performing Arts. BroadwayWorld was there for the event, and brings you full coverage below!
Participants included renowned playwright and director Moisés Kaufman, Gavin Creel (Hair), John Tartaglia (Avenue Q), Nikki M. James (The Book of Mormon) and Beth Leavel (Baby it's You!). Other performers included The Book of Mormon's Andrew Rannells, Baby it's You!'s Erica Ash, Nellie McKay (I Want to Live!), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Rent), Erich Bergen (Jersey Boys), Steven Pasqual (reasons to be pretty), Christina Sajous (American Idiot), Lindsay Mendez (Everyday Rapture), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Spelling Bee), and founding performer Liana Stampur with Clinton Curtis.
Proceeds from the show benefit the NYCLU's youth programs, including its work with LGBT teenagers; its Teen Activist Project, which educates teenagers about their rights; and its work to stop overly aggressive policing in the city's public schools.
