From balancing en pointe on a man’s head to climbing a three-story tower of teetering chairs and mastering The Wheel of Death, Cirque Shanghai’s gifted cadre of contortionists, aerialists and gymnasts perform a breath-taking and surprising array of circus feats in Bai Xi, currently running at The New Victory Theater through January 1, 2012. Bai Xi represents the longest run of The New Victory season, with 27 public performances, including Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Below, BroadwayWorld brings you backstage photos!
Bai Xi, which in English means 100 amazing acts, is directed by Miao Miao Chen, an alumna of one of the top five acrobatic companies in all of China, Shenyang Acrobatic Troupe. Chen is a gold medal recipient of the International Acrobatics Cup in Shenyang and a recipient of the Gold Lion Award at the International Acrobatics Competition in France.
Produced by Haiping Ge and Gary Fjelstad of the Shanghai-based International Special Attractions (ISA), Ltd., Bai Xi features Congcong Cai, Qi Chen, Jian Gao, Shiting Huang, Xueping Huang, ZhiWei Huang, Yang Li, Yuhua Li, Wei Liang, Guangbo Liu, Guangying Liu, Wenwei Liu, Yunming Liu, Jiali Luo, Jie Pang, Wenhua Su, Wu Su, Yushi Su, Huiyuan Tang, Yuchun Wei, Yizhu Wu, Famin Xie, Hailin Zhang, Yehai Zhou and Yuhua Zhu.
Lighting is by Boon Casey of Full Tilt Lighting, costumes are by Hui Ling Huang and sound direction is by Lucas Bonewits with music editing by Jian Min Huang. ISA is the largest presenter of foreign entertainment in China, as well as a producer of Chinese entertainment across North America.
