Phill Niblock Set for Summer Solstice Concert 6/21, Feat. 'Two Lips' with Dither and Neil Leonard

Today, June 21 the earth spins around its axis, summer begins in the northern hemisphere, Pagans leap through bonfires, the planet tilts and Roulette welcomes back maverick, minimalist composer Phill Niblock who will once again take over to celebrate the summer solstice in a visual and audio feast comparable only to the madness of Midsummer. This time round, Niblock presents "Two Lips" a scored orchestra piece featuring the Dither Guitar Quartet and Neil Leonard playing saxophone with Sax Mix. Phill Niblock will perform the Summer Solstice Concert tonight, June 21 at 8pm at Roulette, 509 Atlantic Ave Brooklyn. 

An influential figure on the fringes of the Avant Garde, Niblock has influenced and impacted younger generations of composers such as Susan Stenger, Lois V Vierk, David First, Glenn Branca, Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo. Since 1968 Phill has also put on over 1000 concerts in his loft space, including Ryoji Ikeda, Zbigniew Karkowski, Jim O'Rourke and travelled the world with his truly unique digitally-processed monolithic microtonal drones creating sound without melody or rhythm producing imperceptible changes that creep up on his often unsuspecting audience. Niblock's film, largely recorded on these worldwide excursions are images and echoes of people from different cultures working, devoid of drama and narrative, an incredible, ongoing record of the world at work.

The Dither Quartet, a New York based electric guitar quartet, is dedicated to an eclectic mix of experimental repertoire which spans composed music, improvisation, and electronic manipulation. Formed in 2007, the quartet has performed in the United States and abroad, presenting new commissions, original compositions, multimedia works, and large guitar ensemble pieces. With sounds ranging from clean pop textures to heavily processed noise, from tight rhythmic unity to cacophonous sound mass; all of The Dither Quartet's music wholeheartedly embraces the beautiful, engulfing, and often gloriously loud sound of electric guitars. The quartet's members are Taylor Levine, David Linaburg, Joshua Lopes, and James Moore.

Roulette – one of New York City's premiere venues for experimental music for over 33 years - has reopened bigger and better than ever. Located in a newly renovated 1920s Art Deco concert hall in Downtown Brooklyn, the new Roulette features two levels of seating for up to 400 people (600 standing), an expanded multi-channel sound system, projection screen for film and multi-media events, state-of-the-art lighting system, modular stage, and a specially designed floor to accommodate dance. Teamed with bold new programming, the new Roulette promises to be one of the most exciting places in New York City - if not the country - to experience adventurous music and art.
