Pacific Lyric Association Awarded Not-for-Profit Status

By:

Pacific Lyric Association announced that it has been awarded not-for-profit status by the IRS this week.

Formed in 2006 by Dr. Carlos Oliva, Pacific Lyric Association is dedicated to making the operatic art form more accessible to the general public through education and affordable ticket prices.  Oliva, a native of Madrid, intends to focus primarily on Spanish operas, operettas (zarzuelas) and musicals.

"I want people to see that opera is not boring and give it a chance," he said.

The first production by the new non-profit will be a fully staged production of Moreno Torroba's zarzuela, "Luisa Fernanda."   Four performances will take place at the 1200-seat Ricardo Montelban Theatre in February.  The production will be performed in Spanish with English supertitles.

'Luisa Fernanda' is a great introduction to opera - a mix of romance, comedy and politics with a stirring score," explained Oliva.  "Our new status will help us raise funds in order to offer 1000 seats to students and teachers at no cost."

Performances of "Luisa Fernanda" are scheduled on Thursday, February 19 at 8 pm; Friday, February 20 at 8 pm; and Saturday, February 21 at 3 pm and 8 pm.  For more information, call (323) 960-1057 or go to www.luisafernanda.org.
