"Pretençión" comes to PS122 as part of the undergroundzero festival for a 5-night run as PART OF THE undergroundzero FESTIVAL.

PRETENÇIÓN is the place where Mystery sits at a table with Elegance, and Imagination orders a round of drinks before dinner. It is a world where those drinks are served by a pompous clown. Join Pinchbottom on a sensual quest for Pretençión, an imaginary yet sexy element that turns burlesque performers from "Jerkques" (ordinary people) into self-important "Cirques": infuriatingly magical, unendurably spellbinding artistes who peel away the mundane with every layer of clothing. Step into the world of Pretençión -- but be careful not to trip on the magic.

JULY 2009: It is with great arrogance and ostentation that Pinchbottom humbly announces the return of their smash-hit summer show for a second year. PRETENÇIÓN "un cirque de burlesque, un burlesque de cirque" debuted at SpeigelWorld in 2008 to Pinchbottom's largest crowds ever, and now comes to Performance Space 122 in July as part of the undergroundzero festival. The company's first-ever five-night run will feature a rotating guest cast of over 20 of New York City's top burlesque stars - including multiple Burlesque Hall of Fame award-winners - so the show promises to be more grandiloquent, more unfathomable, more ludicrous, and sexier than ever.

"We're thrilled to be a part of the undergroundzero festival again, as we have been every year since its inception," Pinchbottom Producer Jonny Porkpie orated, bombastically. "Paul (Bargetto, producer of the festival) has always nutured our more pretentious ambitions, and by bringing us to P.S.122, he has enabled us to finally attain that which neo-burlesque has so long sought: the official designation of High Art. We expect our ‘junk' to be on display at the Guggenheim by year's end. Now bring us a single plum floating in champagne!"

"Plus," added producer Nasty Canasta, "Cirque Du Soliel's Kooza is only playing through June, so someone had to step in and fill that gap." And then she repeated the sentiment in French.

PRETENÇIÓN takes cirque where only Pinchbottom can take it; past the bounds of good taste and into the realm of hilarious self-parody. Be dazzled as burlesque performers are transformed into erotic mind-benders, self-hating clowns, impossibly accented ringmasters, incomprehensible lessons in morality, oblique songsmiths, spanking machines, and (of course) bunnies. As Time Out New York said of the debut show, "Those insoucient scamps Jonny Porkpie and Nasty Canasta take their themed burlesque into the lion's den of high-concept clown shows and stuff those haute-cirque's pretensions where the soleil don't shine."

And if all that wasn't enough cause for egotism, July also marks the 5th Anniverary of Pinchbottom's first production ("Cold War Burlesque" at Siberia, July 31, 2004).
