ACCLAIMED SOUTH AFRICAN ACTOR AND PLAYWRIGHT GREIG COETZEE
TO PERFORM TWO AWARD-WINNING ONE-PERSON SHOWS AT MIAMI'S
CARNIVAL CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

December 13, 15; 8 p.m.
December 16, 17; 6:30 p.m.

The Blue Period of Milton Van Der Spuy
"A moving and also hugely entertaining offering." –Cape Times (South Africa)
December 14; 8 p.m.
December 16; 9 p.m.
December 17; 3 p.m.

Carnival Center for the Performing Arts will present the Actors Co–Operative production of two award-winning one-person shows by acclaimed South African actor/writer Greig Coetzee from December 13 – 17 in the Center's Studio Theater. White Men with Weapons, the bitterly funny story of a young South African soldier who discovers when he returns home from war that he is the "bad guy," premieres on Wednesday, December 13 at 8 p.m. The Blue Period of Milton Van der Spuy, the bittersweet tale of a would-be Renaissance man challenged by his own lack of talent, premieres on Thursday, December 14 at 8 p.m.

White Men With Weapons
"Hilarious...swaps characters like a chameleon on cocaine" –Mail & Guardian (South Africa)

"Coetzee is one of the few South African playwrights who can make a point without labouring it... a scathing satire" –Sunday Times (South Africa)

Rife with moments that are funny, poignant, and harrowing, White Men with Weapons which tells the story of the biggest turning point in South Africa's history through the eyes of an unruly bunch of white soldiers, is based on the real–life experience of Coetzee as a member of the South African Defense Force who realizes, just after the fall of Apartheid, that he is part of the problem. Featuring 13 wild characters – from a drug-crazed Rambo to an Anglican chaplain with Tutu–phobia, Coetzee's White Men with Weapons, described by Britain's Daily Mail as "an enormous piece of theatre," confronts us with a reality millions face today: What happens to the minds of men who are forced to fight a senseless war in a foreign land?

The Blue Period of Milton Van der Spuy
"a terrific piece of theatre...exquisite timing ...You will seldom be better entertained." –Natal Witness (South Africa)

"A moving and also hugely entertaining offering from the highly talented Coetzee. A winner, once again." –Cape Times (South Africa)

The Blue Period of Milton Van der Spuy is a delicate piece of tragicomedy that juxtaposes the beauty of imagination against the mundane horrors of a small life. Coetzee plays Milton Van der Spuy, a small man who tries to dream his way out of mediocrity. A comic, but touching character, Milton sees himself as one of the last great artists in a world without beauty. He's almost perfected his flying machine, except he's struggling a bit with the gravity. He will finish writing his rhyming haiku, when he finds a word that rhymes with 'orange'. And he hopes his head won't explode before he completes his 'Life's Work'.
