North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival Welcomes SNL Writer Bryan Tucker

The North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival announces that Saturday Night Live writer Bryan Tucker has been added to the line-up of the 9th Annual Festival. Tucker is performing Saturday, February 21, at 9:00 p.m. at the ArtsCenter Mainstage. Tickets cost $14 for general admission, $12 for Friends of The Arts Center, and $10 for students. The ArtsCenter is located at 300-G East Main St. in Carrboro.

Tucker is performing with Superbest, an improv troupe from the Washington Improv Theatre, and an All-Star performance of the top improvisers from the festival. Tucker is known as a comedy writer, but he does perform as a stand-up comedian and sketch actor. He is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hil and has written for some of the top TV sketch shows in the past decade including Saturday Night Live, The Chris Rock Show and Chappelle's Show. A sketch that Bryan wrote for Chappelle's Show ("The Race Draft") was picked as #12 on Nerve and IFC.com's "50 Greatest Sketches of All Time."

Before he broke into TV writing, Bryan was a performer who played over 500 shows around the country as a stand up and as a player in the sketch/ improv group Selected Hilarity. Bryan still does stand up around New York. He is in his fourth season of Saturday Night Live. He lives in New York City with his wife and two children.

Dirty South Improv (DSI) produced the first North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival in 2001 to give North Carolina audiences and students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill the chance to experience workshops in the art of Chicago-style improvisation. Then known as the Dirty South Improv Festival, the festival has rapidly become one of the largest comedy festivals in the nation. Last year, the Dirty South Improv Festival increased the population of Carrboro for a week by 4%. With professional performances in Chicago and New York and its college touring company, DSI started to receive national attention. The 2006 festival celebrated the opening of the DSI Comedy Theater, an 80-seat venue in North Carolina and the new home for shows and the DSI Training Center. The festival has attracted high level instructors in improvisation including: Asaf Ronen, Jeff Griggs, Dan Izzo, Eric Hunicutt, Kevin Patrick Robbins, Anthony King and Jill Bernard. From the DSI Comedy Training Center and DSI Comedy Theater in Carrboro, NC to its productions in Chicago, and professional Touring Company, the Dirty South name has spread around the country, drawing both participants and quality teaching staff to its annual comedy festival year after year.
