New Hampshire Theatre Project Presents Edward Albee's SEASCAPE 11/13-29

By:

Popular playwright Edward Albee, known for his great dramas Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Three Tall Women, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1975 for Seascape - quite literally a play like no other. A philosophical comedy with dashes of domestic drama, absurdism, science fiction and evolutionary introspection, Seascape tells the story of a middle-aged American couple relaxing on the beach contemplating life and retirement who have a startling encounter with quite a different couple: Sarah and Leslie, two human size sea lizards.

The two couples engage in a wide-ranging discussion of love, relationships, communication, human progress, empathy and more, as the highly-evolved humanoid sea-lizards consider a life-altering move from the ocean to the land. Comical, complex, and challenging, the play defies conventional labels, and highlights Albee's acerbic wit
in an upbeat and playful mood.
"Seascape is seldom produced," says Director Blair Hundertmark, "but it is exactly the kind of thoughtful, interesting and smart material that NHTP has become known and awarded for. Albee has a unique gift for examining common themes by uncommon methods, and making us laugh at ourselves while we discover some truth within but never knew quite how to express."

New Hampshire Theatre Project's 2009/10 season is partially funded by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Incorporated in 1988, NHTP is dedicated to creating innovative, excellent and educational theatre that serves as a catalyst for personal transformation and community dialogue. Seascape challenges audiences to explore the deep issues that shape human beliefs, as did previous NHTP productions of Doubt: A Parable, The Odyssey, Elephant Man and Someone Who'll Watch Over Me.
