National Asian Artists Project (Baayork Lee, Executive Artistic Director) whose mission of "showcasing the work of Asian-American theatre artists through performance, outreach and educational programming" is pleased to host the 4th Annual DISCOVER: NEW MUSICALS, an evening of staged readings of new short musicals tonight, December 7, 2015 at 7:30pm at the 47th Street Theater (304 West 47th Street, New York).
New works are the future of the American musical theatre and NAAP advocates Asian-American actors to be a participating voice. The evening will present the works of emerging writers, composers and directors, many of who are of Asian descent.
A panel of musical theatre professionals, headed by Ms. Lee, reviewed dozens of submissions before selecting this year's showcased musicals. Auditions were held in early November and NAAP is delighted to announce the chosen musicals and casts.
"The selection process was not easy this year, but after much consideration, we feel the four selected musicals will provide a highly entertaining and exciting evening for all," stated Baayork Lee.
The four new musicals are:
Flappers in Chains by Marcus Yi (Writer/Lyricist/Composer) is the story of two "Flappers" that break into an abandoned theatre but only one will survive the night. Directed by Billy Bustamonte, this piece will featureMichelle Cabinian* and Carol Angeli*.
How Love Feels by Marella Martin Koch (Writer/Lyricist) and Jonathan Fadner (Composer) is about wanting love. When the man in the moon enters the lives of a young and successful Upper West side couple, they all begin to discover love isn't quite what they all thought it was. Directed by Steven Eng and musical direction by Mark T. Evans, this piece features Kennedy Kanagawa*, Lisa Helmi Johanson* and Sam Simahk*.
Let Her Kick by Brandon Michael Lowden (Writer/Lyricist) and Minjoung Hwang (Composer) is about Gaby who kicks for the Barnesville High School football team, but can a girl play in the championship? Female athletes of the 1990s navigate this courtroom drama. Directed by Akane Ugaki with musical direction by Minjoung Hwangthis piece will feature Lora Nicolas, Stephanie Mieko Cohen*, Kimberly Chatterjee, Kendyl Ito, Colin Miyamoto*, Eric Badique*, Gerard Salvador*, and Olivia Braza*.
Second Place by Kate Chadwick (Writer/Lyricist) and Edison Hong (Composer) is about Chef Bridget Samson who is chasing after her dream of winning an international cooking title. What happens when ambition stops her from fully living her life? Directed by Nina Zoie Lam this piece features Loresa Lanceta*, Garett Taketa*,Austin Ku*, Rebecca Larkin*, Jensen Olaya*, Viet Vo*, Kavin Panmeechao*, and Hyemi Kim.
