NYC Opera Sets Details For Rufus Wainwright Concert 11/17

NYC-Opera-Sets-Details-For-Rufus-Wainwright-Concert-20010101

New York City Opera today announced concert details for Who Are You New York?: The Songs of Rufus Wainwright - a one-night only concert on Thursday, November 17 at 8:00pm at the Rose Theater in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. The evening will feature the performance premiere of Rufus Wainwright's All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu, which will be performed for the first time in its entirety as a song cycle.

Additionally, City Opera announced that tickets for the entire 2011-2012 season are now on sale for the general public, and can be purchased by calling 212.870.5600 or online at www.nycOpera.com.

To celebrate the U.S. premiere of his first opera Prima Donna, this dynamic artist will offer a unique glimpse into his eclectic songbook for one incredible night only. A talented line-up of opera singers including soprano Corinne Winters, mezzo soprano Liza Forrester, baritone Andrew Garland, and baritone Joshua Jeremiah will interpret Wainwright's song cycle All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu, which will then be followed by an intimate performance by the songwriter himself of compositions from his catalogue as well as other songs he has performed throughout his illustrious career.

Rufus Wainwright Affectionately referred to by Elton John as "the greatest songwriter on the planet" and praised by The New York Times for his "genuine originality," Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. The son of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle and brother of Martha Wainwright, Rufus has achieved his success by carving out his own singular sound in the worlds of rock, opera, theater, dance, and film.

Wainwright has received Juno Awards for Best Alternative Album in 1999 and 2002 for Rufus Wainwright and Poses, respectively, and nominations for his albums Want Two (2005) and Release the Stars (2008). He was nominated for Songwriter of the Year in 2008 for Release the Stars, which went Gold in Canada and the UK. He also composed the original music for choreographer Stephen Petronio's work BLOOM which has toured across the country. His record, Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall, was nominated for a Grammy and was released concurrently with a live DVD (Rufus! Rufus! Rufus! Does Judy! Judy! Judy!) capturing his celebrated Judy Garland tribute performance at the London Palladium in 2007. He has composed a musical adaptation of Shakespeare Sonnets with noted Director Robert Wilson at the Berliner Ensemble which premiered in April 2009 and was just recently performed with the San Francisco Symphony in November 2010. It heads to Chicago in August 2011. Rufus' last live album was a recording from his Release The Stars tour titled, Milwaukee At Last!!!.

Wainwright has released eight albums and three DVDs to date, and has appeared on numerous soundtracks and compilations, as well as collaborating with artists like Elton John, David Byrne, Rosanne Cash, Pet Shop Boys, and Keane. His newest album, All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu, was released earlier this year to much critical acclaim.
