Broadway and operetta unite in the New York Philharmonic's concert performance of Leonard Bernstein's satirical, effervescent musical CANDIDE, slated for release online on Digital Theatre, Wednesday 4 June 2014. The show features music by Leonard Bernstein, book adapted from Voltaire by Hugh Wheeler, lyrics by Richard Wilbur, and additional lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, John Latouche, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker and Leonard Bernstein.

Equally drawn from the classical and musical theatre worlds, the cast includes Broadway's Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked, Glee) as Cunegonde, Patti LuPone in a star turn as The Old Lady, Paul Groves as Candide, and Sir Thomas Allen as Dr Pangloss / Narrator.

Staged by Broadway actor-director Lonny Price, whose work includes the San Francisco Symphony's Emmy Award-winning, semi-staged production of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd in 2000, Candide features Bernstein protégé Marin Alsop conducting the New York Philharmonic, with the participation of the Westminster Symphonic Choir.

Candide's journey from growing up in a Baron's castle, his expulsion from his home and his travels to Eldorado, where jewels line the roads, is a whirlwind of adventure, featuring the songs 'Glitter and Be Gay' 'It Must Be So' and 'Make Our Garden Grow'.

Candide is the third live musical captured on film to be released on Digital Theatre, alongside two standout Sondheim musicals; Maria Friedman's multi-award winning production of Merrily We Roll Along (Best Musical Revival and Best Sound Design, Oliver Awards 2014, Best Musical, Evening Standard Awards 2013; Best Musical, Critics' Circle Awards 2012), and the Open Air Theatre's multi-award winning production of Into The Woods (Best Musical Revival, Olivier Awards 2011; Best Director for Timothy Sheader, WhatsOnStage Awards 2011).

Robert Delamere, Co-Founder and CEO of Digital Theatre said: "I am delighted that Digital Theatre are releasing Leonard Bernstein's Candide. This Broadway classic, a hugely entertaining and intelligent musical will now be accessible to a global online audience. Together with Merrily We Roll Along and Into the Woods, Digital Theatre is growing a library of musicals that stand the test of time, and can be enjoyed time and time again".
