Trap Door Theatre proudly presents the world premiere of the English translation of No Darkness Round My Stone by French Playwright Fabrice Melquiot. A poet in spirit and practice, Melquiot’s work is marked by noted lyricism and unpretentious accessibility. In No Darkness Round my Stone, Melquiot gives us a comedic and empathetic look at the everyday life of grave robbers. Mixing hyper-realism with surrealism, and banality with complexity, No Darkness Round My Stone examines the human desire to be different from what we are and the remarkable buoyancy of hope.

Playwright Fabrice Melquiot started his theatrical career as an actor but began to sway towards writing as early as 1998 when he published two children’s texts, Les Petits Melancoliques and Les Jardins deBeamon, at the School of Leisure.  Both pieces were broadcast across French airways on the popular radio program, "French Culture".  Over the past decade, Melquiot has written over 25 plays, including a dozen aimed at young audiences. His work has won various awards throughout the world, including the grand prize Paul Gilson for The Commonwealth in Montreal in 1998, and the European prize for the best radio work for adolescents in Bratislava in 2000 for his work, How Perlino.  The year 2003 was especially remarkable for Melquiot; he won the award for Best New Talent by the SACD, the Jean-Jacques of Figaro Prize and two awards of the Syndicat National de la Critique for the Devil Sharing.

Director Max Truax founded and was Artistic Director of Filament Theatre Company in Los Angeles.  Previous directing credits include Termen Vox Machina at Chicago’s Oracle Theatre, and Cassandra, Farewell Juliet, Gadfly, Blood Wedding, Salome, and When We Dead Awaken in Los Angeles.  Max is also the creator and director of two experimental operas, Being Not Nothing, and Furniture.
