NHTP Presents LYSISTRATA 1/8-1/24/2010

By:

New Hampshire Theatre Project continues its 2009-2010 season with a new adaptation of Aristophanes' Lysistrata. Why a new adaptation? For years artistic director Genevieve Aichele has loved the concept of this Greek comedy but found most literal translations difficult to follow by contemporary audiences, while many others use stilted rhyme without literary power. There were also very few translations by women. So Aichele, also a playwright, realized that perhaps it was time to try her hand at the task. "The ancient theme of Lysistrata is timeless and universal," says Aichele, "and the challenge of juxtaposing hilarious comedy with poignant human struggles creates an extraordinary dramatic tension for any audience."

This production of Lysistrata, directed by NHTP's artistic team of Aichele and Associate Director Meghann Beauchamp, includes original music by Agnes Charlesworth. Song lyrics are based on interviews with those who have fought in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as their loved ones. Beauchamp, who has family members currently serving in the armed forces, states: "It is important to us that this production not be seen as simply an 'anti-war play' but a play that wrestles with complicated, difficult issues and honors the sacrifices made by women and men who have served and are currently serving."

With production elements by costume designer Michele Macadaeg, lighting designer Quentin Stockwell and scenic designer Meghann Beauchamp, Lysistrata runs from January 8 through 24, 2010 at New Hampshire Theatre Project, 959 Islington Street, Portsmouth, NH. Reservations can be made at 603-431-6644 ext. 5 or reservations@nhtheatreproject.org and reservations are highly recommended. Performances are 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 2pm on Sundays. Tickets are $22 general admission, $15 students & seniors ($20 & $13 for members).
