The cast recording made its exclusive debut last week with a full stream on WNYC.org. Click here to listen to WNYC Soundcheck's conversation with the score's composer, Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act). Menken composed the score with lyrics by Jack Feldman, book by four-time Tony Award® winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy) and with orchestrations by Daniel Troob. The cast recording was produced by Alan Menken, Michael Kosarin, Frank Filipetti and Chris Montan with Executive Producer Kurt Deutsch and Musical Director Mark Hummel. The stage version of Newsies includes many of the beloved songs from the film, while introducing seven brand-new songs along with new arrangements and orchestrations. The iconic music is performed by the musical's original cast and headed by Jeremy Jordan.

The limited engagement of Newsies opened on Broadway on March 29th to overwhelming acclaim. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Newsies is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival). Though intended only as a pilot production before the title was licensed for regional, professional and amateur productions, Newsies' short run at the Paper Mill Playhouse last fall engendered extraordinary interest from the media and public alike. The show's cast was invited to perform on ABC's 'The View©,' the first time in the talk show's 15-season history that a regional production had ever done so. Fans who had waited nearly 20 years to see Newsies live onstage, alongside audiences discovering the work for the first time, caused a sensation heard all the way to Times Square.

Sh-K-Boom with its imprint Ghostlight Records has become the leading independent force in Original Broadway Cast Recordings, having built a library of over 100 records during the last 12 years featuring the most successful Broadway musicals and solo albums by Broadway's biggest stars. Founded by Kurt Deutsch and wife Sherie Rene Scott, the label was created by and for the Broadway community and has reinvented the musical theatre recording landscape through their high-quality recordings, innovative marketing techniques to reach the next generation of Broadway music fans, as well as the creation of a new type of 'United Artists' environment for Broadway producers and artists to participate in the funding and co-ownership of their albums.

Ghostlight celebrated a major milestone this past year with their Grammy Award winning release The Book of Mormon, which became the first Broadway cast recording to break into the Billboard Top 10 since the original 1969 release of Hair, taking its place as the biggest-selling digital cast recording of all time. Other recent releases on the label include the Grammy-nominated 2011 revival cast recording of Anything Goes, the new revival recording of Godspell, plus the OCRs of Elf, Catch Me If You Can, Sister Act and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and solo albums from some of Broadway's biggest stars: Sutton Foster, Kelli O'Hara, Alice Ripley, Christine Ebersole, Melissa Errico and Ben Vereen. Over the years, Ghostlight has preserved the scores of some of Broadway's most well-known musicals, including the Grammy Award-winning In the Heights, Next to Normal, Hair, Legally Blonde, Everyday Rapture, Passing Strange, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and The Drowsy Chaperone.

Disney Theatrical Productions, a division of The Walt Disney Studios, was formed in 1994 and operates under the direction of Thomas Schumacher. Worldwide, its seven Broadway titles have been seen by over 103 million theatergoers, grossed over $7.4 billion and have cumulatively run a staggering 189 years. With 15 productions currently produced or licensed, a Disney musical is being performed professionally somewhere on the planet virtually every hour of the day.

The company's inaugural production, Beauty and the Beast, opened in 1994. It played a remarkable 13 year run on Broadway and has been produced in 28 countries worldwide. In November 1997, Disney opened The Lion King, which received six 1998 Tony® Awards including Best Musical and continues in its 15th smash year, having welcomed over 60 million visitors worldwide. The Lion King can also currently be seen on tour across North America and in London's West End, Hamburg, Tokyo and Madrid.

Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida opened on Broadway next, winning four 2000 Tony® Awards, and spawning productions around the world. Mary Poppins, a co-production with Cameron Mackintosh, opened in London in 2004 and has established itself as one of the biggest stage musical successes to emerge in recent years. The Tony Award®-winning Broadway production opened in 2006 at Disney's New Amsterdam Theatre, where it continues to delight audiences. Mary Poppins can also be seen on tour across North America and in Australia.

Tarzan®, which opened on Broadway in 2006, is now an international hit with an award-winning production in Germany.

In January 2008, The Little Mermaid opened on Broadway and was the #1-selling new musical of that year. Its success continues with an upcoming European debut in Holland.

Other successful stage musical ventures have included King David in concert, the national tour of On The Record, several touring versions of Disney's High School Musical, Der Glöckner Von Notre Dame in Berlin and the premiere of the stage adaptation of Aladdin at The 5th Avenue Theatre.
2012 will see two new DTP-developed titles arrive on Broadway. The breakout new American musical Newsies, which premiered at Paper Mill Playhouse, will play a limited engagement at the Nederlander Theatre beginning in March. Peter and the Starcatcher, which set box office records at its 2011 New York Theatre Workshop run, will open at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in April.
In addition, DTP licenses stage performance rights to more than a dozen Disney musicals around the world through Music Theatre International.
