NAACP ACT-SO Remix & Reunion this Saturday to include theater exhibitions
The Dallas Chapter of the NAACP will be holding its ACT-SO Remix & Reunion this Sat., Jun. 6 from 8-10 pm at the South Dallas Cultural Center, located at 3400 South Fitzhugh (at Robert B. Cullum), Dallas, Texas. There is no admission cost.
ACT-SO is an acronym for Afro Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics. Often referred to as an "Olympics of the Mind', ACT-SO was created in 1977 by the late Vernon D. Jarrett, a journalist, activist, and tireless advocate for black youth (click on this link on YouTube to hear Mr. Jarrett in his own words).
Winners of the Dallas 2009 ACT-SO competition will be presented and participants will be treated to performances of music, dance, poetry, dramatics, and oratory along with art and science exhibitions (for an example of the event, click on this 2nd link also on YouTube). In addition, the winners will be joined by ACT-SO alumni, former winners and competitors, who will share performances and reflections of their ACT-SO experiences.
The ACT-SO competition encompasses over 20 categories in the arts, sciences and humanities. First place winners receive airfare and hotel accommodations to the national competition in New York City. National winners receive laptops and cash prizes ranging from $1000-2000. Applications are available from high school counselors or act.so_dallas@yahoo.com.
