The Royal National Theatre awarding winning play Coram Boy is set in 18th century London and depicts the harsh realities experienced by illigitimate children and their mothers at the time. The story focuses on a devious and deceitful man known as the "Coram Man," who take advantage of desperate mothers by promising to take their unwanted children to the hospital for a fee, and also on the lives of two orphans whose lives become intertwined in this episode of British social history. Though dark and serious, the play concludes with a sense of hopefulness, as well. With more than forty student performers and a vast array of settings, Coram Boy is directed by former Hartt Dean Malcolm Morrison, with musical direction by John Pike. Coram Boy is sure to be a true theatrical feast.

The story is adapted for the stage by Helen Edmundson, from the novel by Jamila Gavin. The play features music by Adrian Sutton and original composition by Dan Morel, and also features music from G.F. Handel's Messiah.

The Hartt School is the comprehensive performing arts conservatory of the University of Hartford that offers innovative degree programs in music, dance, and theatre. Founded 90 years ago, Hartt has been an integral part of the University of Hartford since its charter merged the then Hartt School of Music, the Hartford Art School, and Hillyer College to create the University in 1957. 2010 marks Hartt's 90th year of providing world class performing arts education to students in Greater-Hartford and around the world. With more than 400 concerts, recitals, plays, master classes, dance performances, and musical theatre productions a year, performance is central to Hartt's curriculum.
