ON THE TOWN's Misty Copeland turned to Instagram today to share the news that she has signed on to Disney's live action THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS. Directed by Lasse Hallstrom and penned by Ashleigh Powell, the project is based on the classic holiday story.
According to Deadline, Copeland will take on the role of the lead ballerina in the film's sole dance sequence. Check out the Instagram post below:

Based on E.T.A. Hoffman's Christmas Eve tale, the story follows "a young girl who finds a Nutcracker doll among the family's gifts and is charged by her parents to take special care of it. Under the cover of darkness, the Nutcracker comes to life, along with an evil Mouse King with seven heads, introducing Marie to the magical world of toys and the brave Nutcracker who will change her life forever."
Copeland made her Broadway debut in 2015 in ON THE TOWN. That same year she was named the the first female African-American principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre. Copeland served as a guest judge for three weeks on FOX's popular competition showSO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE alongside ON THE TOWN producer Nigel Lythgoe. In June 2015, Copeland took on the lead roles in both ABT's SWAN LAKE and ROMEO AND JULIET.
