Mint Theater Spring Benefit to Feature Reading of Light Falling

By:

Teresa Deevy's brilliant one-act play, Light Falling, was her last ever to be produced. Never published, the play will be seen for the first time in 50 years, using a typescript rescued from the Deevy family home in Ireland last spring by director Jonathan Bank. Light Falling is the story of a great love endangered by carelessness. "In this play," writes John Jordan, one of Ireland's greatest critics, "Deevy began to work in the field of pure, unexplicated, poetic statement."

Charles Keating ("Brideshead Revisited," "Another World"), Shawn Fagan (Wife to James Whelan), Ellen Adair (What the Public Wants), Brian Keane (Happy Now) and Letitia Lange (Power of Darkness) will star in this one night only event at The Players Club (16 Gramercy Park South) on Monday April 11th.

Proceeds from the 2011 benefit will support the Teresa Deevy Project, a two-year celebration of "one of the most undeservedly neglected and significant playwrights of the 20th Century" (The Irish Times.) Deevy's brilliance was obscured until the Mint's acclaimed production of Wife to James Whelan last fall.

Mint Theater Company, "that truffle hound of half-buried treasures from the past" (Village Voice), has a celebrated reputation for re-discovering worthy but neglected gems and has brought new vitality to timeless but timely plays since 1992. The Mint was awarded an Obie for "combining the excitement of discovery with the richness of tradition." Mint was awarded a special Drama Desk Award for "Unearthing, presenting and preserving forgotten plays of merit."
