According to Billboard.com, Melissa Etheridge and "Nurse Jackie" co-creator Linda Wallem are co-writing a new rock musical. Etheridge describes it as a meld between a classic show and rock musical, featuring "New York City" and "piano bars." The show is still in the works.

Etheridge tells Billboard, "I keep talking about it...It needs to get done, but it's just me and Linda, and we have our day jobs that keep it really busy. But I want to do it right and make it be something that lasts."

Etheridge played the role of St. Jimmy in American Idiot during a one-week engagement in 2011. She has been a core Island Records artist since the release of her critically-acclaimed eponymous RIAA double-platinum debut album. For several years, Etheridge's popularity built around such memorable songs as "Bring Me Some Water" (from her debut), "No Souvenirs" (from Brave And Crazy) and "Ain't It Heavy" (from Never Enough), for which she won her first Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal.

In other news, Etheridge is also recording new album for release in late 2012 to follow her 2010 work, "Fearless Love." She began recording this month in Los Angeles with producers Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, Norah Jones) and Steve Booker (Lindsay Lohan, Stevie Nicks).
